Things To Do In or Near Christchurch
A short distance from The Fisherman's Haunt, Christchurch Priory Church is 900 years old. The building offers a stunning example of well-crafted vaulted ceilings and is the most prominent feature of the town when viewed from a distance.
Enjoy the splendour of the church at your leisure, or join one of the many tours on offer, which include rooftop visits and a trip the bell tower. If you’re lucky, you might see the bell ringers in action, and a cream tea is included with many of the tours. The Priory also holds ticketed events featuring singers, choirs and orchestras throughout the year.
We’re also close to the New Forest, which is a great area for walking. Mudeford Beach and Queen's Park can be found within five miles of The Fisherman's Haunt, while for a relaxing walk or run, the River Avon is literally on our doorstep.
Further afield, Bournemouth Beach and Hengistbury Head are a 20-minute drive from us, and popular with guests hoping to catch some fresh sea air. Weather permitting, you might be tempted to go for a swim or soak up some glorious sunshine. These vast beaches don't feel overcrowded even on busy days, and are also among the cleanest in the UK.
For an adventurous day out, Brownsea Island, located in Poole Harbour, is an hour’s drive along the coast from The Fisherman’s Haunt. Offering spectacular views across to the Purbeck Hills, wildlife enthusiasts can take advantage of hideouts for bird-watching and self-guided nature walks, which allow visitors to explore natural habitats including woodland, heathland and a lagoon.
You’ll also find the rare red squirrel and a variety of birds here, including dunlin, kingfishers, and oystercatchers at Brownsea. With its sandy beaches, the island appeals to all ages.
Finally, the local Aviation Museum is just five miles from The Fisherman’s Haunt, and is the perfect place to take enthusiasts and kids. Run by knowledgeable volunteers, it features a selection of aircraft and other vehicles – visitors can even sit in most of the cockpits. Bournemouth Airport, with all its activity, is easily viewable from here too, and the museum offers a shop selling aviation memorabilia.
The closest railway station is Christchurch, a ten-minute bus, taxi or car ride away. To get to us by bus, drop off at the bus stop outside Winkton garage, and follow the Salisbury road to Winkton Green – we’re just a short walk away from there.
